Waste streams to value streams
Most city trees are relegated to the landfill, ground into mulch or chopped into firewood. We extend the life left in them.

About City Bench
City Bench creates one-of-a-kind furniture and shapes unique spaces for institutions, businesses and individuals, all from trees that were headed for the landfill.
Our story
City Bench grew out of our passion for building beautiful objects with meaning and a story. It also grew out of a reverence for the trees that line our streets, fill our public spaces and enliven our campuses. Those trees represent our shared space and generations of common stories. They are also a vital and overlooked resource.
There are over 70 billion trees in U.S. metropolitan areas. New Haven removes more than 600 trees each year, New York City fells 7,000, and hundreds of thousands more come down across the country. Most of these grand, historic trees are relegated to the landfill, ground into mulch or chopped into firewood. We extend the life left in those trees by building uniquely handcrafted furniture that tells their stories.
Our pieces have a “birth certificate” describing the tree’s origin, significance and story.

The team
Artists, sculptors and storytellers who share a reverence for the trees that line our streets.

An artist whose installations create “a sense of place” in libraries, nature centers, hospitals and children’s museums across the Northeast.
For the past 15 years Ted’s art has explored the whimsy and fascination of childhood, boldly experimenting with materials to enliven children’s spaces. While working on the Connecticut Trash Museum exhibit about our “throw away society”, the idea of handcrafted furniture from street trees took hold. Street trees, considered waste by most municipalities, were the solution: a way to upcycle a perceived waste product into sustainable, unique and meaningful furniture. City Bench is the result. Ted lives with his wife, three children, two cats and two dogs in Higganum, CT.
A storyteller committed to turning waste streams into value streams through collaboration.

Joined in 2013 and quickly became invaluable. Ben manages the shop and leads all fabrication.
Ben graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 2011, majoring in sculpture and minoring in metalsmithing, where his materials of choice were steel and animal bone. After graduating he spent two years with an art conservator rehabilitating monuments in cement, bronze and stone. Wood is a more recent medium, but he has a natural feel for it and has become an extraordinary craftsman. Outside the shop he turns wrenches on project cars.
A sculptor with an MFA from UConn who has taught sculpture at Connecticut colleges for thirteen years.
Michael studied studio art at Southern Connecticut State University and earned his MFA in sculpture at the University of Connecticut. He has taught at Southern Connecticut State University, Fairfield University and Manchester Community College, and worked with an art object conservator preserving historic objects. His work explores preserving wood’s living qualities through utility, and has been exhibited throughout New England. He lives in Naugatuck, CT.
